Title: Graduate Studies Abroad and Beyond: Building a Successful Career in Science

Speaker: Charuksha Walgama, PhD. , Department of Analytical Chemistry at the University of Houston-Clear Lake, USA.

Speaker Bio: Dr. Charuksha Walgama is an Assistant Professor of Analytical Chemistry at the University of Houston-Clear Lake. He received his B.Sc. in Chemistry from the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, and his Ph.D. in Bioanalytical Chemistry from Oklahoma State University, followed by postdoctoral training at the University of Texas at Austin. His research focuses on immobilizing biomolecules onto electrochemical platforms for biosensing and biocatalytic applications, developing low-cost analytical devices for diagnostic applications, and designing nanostructured electrode platforms for electrochemical green synthesis.

Abstract: This seminar offers an overview of study abroad opportunities for Sri Lankan science graduates interested in higher studies and career development in the United States. The talk covers pathways to M.S. and Ph.D. programs, the benefits U.S. universities offer, and key factors to consider when applying. It also addresses common challenges in graduate school, particularly during Ph.D. training, and explores career paths after graduate studies, including academia and industry. Dr. Charuksha Walgama will also share his own journey from Sri Lanka to the United States and give a brief overview of his research in bioanalytical chemistry.
