Establishment of a Natural Resources-based Nanofabrication Core Facility in Sri Lanka

To keep pace with global advancements and leverage Sri Lanka’s natural resources—such as its abundant graphite, mica, and ilmenite—Sri Lanka must expand into nanomaterials, microelectronic devices, and energy storage technologies.

To realize this vision, a facility equipped with advanced equipment is necessary to synthesize modern materials and fabricate micro- and nano-scale devices. This new laboratory will address this need, engaging both fundamental research capabilities and advanced student training in transformative technologies like semiconductors.

Initially housed within the Department of Physics at the University of Colombo (UOC), the proposed facility is designed as a national shared resource, open to researchers and students from all Sri Lankan universities. The initiative will be led by a senior UOC faculty member, supported by two additional UOC faculty members and one from the University of Moratuwa.

The project’s first phase requires an investment of US $30,000, representing a strategic step toward strengthening Sri Lanka’s technological capacity, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration, and nurturing the next generation of scientific talent.

The Colombo University Faculty of Science Alumni Association of North America (CUFSAA-NA) , a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, has proudly undertaken to support this initiative. CUFSAA-NA has a strong record of advancing science and technology education in Sri Lanka through numerous impactful projects. For detailed information regarding CUFSAA-NA as the organization, as well as the proposed Nanofabrication Core Facility, please visit: https://www.cufsaa.com/nanofabrication_facilty/

On behalf of CUFSAA-NA, we invite your generous contribution to make this transformative and worthwhile vision of establishing the Nanofabrication Core Facility in Sri Lanka a reality.
